Delhi Capitals End MI Drought

March 24, 2019, was the last time when Delhi Capitals defeated Mumbai Indians before today. Having lost 5 encounters ever since, that included all meetings in the last year, Delhi has finally got the better of MI

Mumbai Indians almost tried to get it done for the third time in a row by squeezing the opposition at the back end of the game, but the DC side in Chennai was up to their task.

Promoted above the captain himself, Lalit Yadav ensured that even though he did not play a blitzing knock, he was unbeaten till the very end, getting the job done for his side.

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma in their last game here at the Chepauk against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, became the first captain to bat first after winning the toss in IPL 2021. It proved to be the correct decision as MI clogged the SRH run chase. This battle against DC, a side that has held the wooden spoon against them in recent times, started as per script for the defending champions.

Rohit Sharma spoke about the importance of doing the basics right during the coin flip. To drive the point home, he mentioned that not thinking out of the box too much is key for optimum performance in conditions like these here in Chennai where batsmen have found it tough to get a move on. Not quite sure if they were able to walk the talk when we closely look at the dismissals of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya.

Amit Mishra coming into contention for Delhi Capitals in their Chennai leg was something that many would have predicted as soon as the venues and schedules were announced. Mumbai Indians, a champion side that they are, could have tackled him better. Rohit Sharma got off to a flyer with some attacking strokes but perished in the pursuit of more. Hardik Pandya did not think it to be wise enough for getting a sighter of the conditions and how were the bowlers operating. It was a wild swing of the bat as the duo of Smith and Mishra struck twice in the same over.

For Delhi Capitals, this victory is of immense significance. It will bring great pleasure to their fans as Mumbai Indians were almost growing to become bullish on fixtures when these two sides are involved. IPL has seen the exponential growth of Delhi Capitals throughout the last couple of years. Defeating MI after coming from Mumbai, without much time to assess what will work for them or not, are big positives.

Mumbai Indians wanted to be more assertive than circumspect and they would look bat to their engine room – the 3 Ps – Pandya, Krunal, and Pollard’s batting contributions. Amongst the 3 of them, just 3 runs were scored in 11 deliveries. How often do we see opposition sides getting all of them out for a cheap score? If we are asked to point out one, this was the major battle that DC won.

Hardik Pandya’s fielding has been electric. It was a controversial moment in the game when a stunning effort, claimed to be successful by the younger brother, eventually proved to be a decision in the batsman’s favor.

With Boult bowling, Shikhar Dhawan had ballooned one into the air with a very agile Hardik Pandya almost converting that half chance into a dismissal. It’s natural for people to concoct various viewpoints but it only made sense to give the benefit of doubt to the batsman. Shikhar Dhawan went on to play a good knock of 45 and boy, isn’t he playing well!

Mumbai Indians did make a match out of it by taking it right down till the penultimate over. At that stage, Jasprit Bumrah overstepped not once, but twice. It was the cardinal sin the gave away the advantage to DC. On the brighter side of things, Mahela Jayawardene would be happy to see how Pollard was able to march the troops in the absence of Rohit Sharma in the second half of the game, making it so deep. The Net Run Rate doesn’t get affected much in such scenarios.

As Delhi Capitals’ Instagram handle showed, players were all smiles going into their hotel rooms. Ponting was seen enjoying a light moment with Marcus Stoinis, who started it all by opening the bowling and inducing an edge of QDK’s blade in his second over. Overall, as we keep saying it, Delhi Capitals are shaping up to be a daunting force. Whether they will be able to go all the way and pick their maiden IPL trophy is an answer that only time will reveal. For the present moment, there is little that suggests otherwise.
