End Of Paytm-BCCI Deal: Mastercard Replaces Paytm As Title Sponsor For BCCI

The Paytm-BCCI deal:

The fintech giant Paytm has been the title sponsor for all the matches hosted by BCCI for almost half a decade now. The established payments brand has been the title sponsor for all the International matches taking place in India, as well as the major domestic Indian matches. The list includes some of the prominent domestic Indian tournaments namely the Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, Deodhar Trophy, Irani Cup, and the famous Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Paytm started its association with the BCCI for the title sponsorship back in 2015 (After the World Cup), which is almost 7 years back. The Vijay Sharma-founded well-established organization agreed to the deal for a whopping amount of INR 203 crores, which is approximately INR 2.4 CR for each encounter, for the period of four years (2015-19).

The sponsorship contract officially expired in 2019, However it was last renewed by the same company in August 2019, but this time with a huge spike in the pay. After winning the bid, Paytm agreed to pay INR 326.8 crores to BCCI for four years of title sponsorship rights (i.e. INR 3.80 crores per match). It was a significant growth (58%) as compared to the last time for the title sponsors slot.

Earlier, A prominent smartphone company namely Oppo was the title sponsor of the BCCI. The dependable handset brand shook hands with the BCCI in March 2017. They confirmed that they will be paying a whopping amount of INR 1,079 crores for the five-year period. They committed to providing BCCI with INR 4.5 crore per match in case of bilateral ties, and Rs 1.56 crore for an ICC event match till July 2019.

End of the Paytm-BCCI deal:

What comes as a big development is that Paytm has officially requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India to hand over the title rights to the payment giants namely MasterCard. Paytm is keen to transfer the same rights to MasterCard for the remainder of the tenure. The company has allegedly missed the deadline for reassignment of sponsorship in July. However, The BCCI is willing to consider Paytm’s request due to ‘Long-standing relationship.

Several credible reports suggest that MasterCard is now all set to be named as the new title sponsor by the BCCI. A sigh of relief for the BCCI amid all the chaos is that there will be no loss in terms of the financials. MasterCard will be paying the same amount as per the Paytm-BCCI deal (i.e. INR 3.80 crores per match) to the Indian Cricket board.

According to an Economic Times report, The deal is set to be made official by the Sourav Ganguly-led Indian cricket board in a maximum of a week’s time. However, The experts expect the contract to be announced before the week’s end. MasterCard is set to remain as the title sponsor for the remainder of the tenure (Till 2023).

Unacademy and Upstox to back out:

What comes as another big update is that Upstox and Unacademy, both prominent edtech companies are keen to end their associate sponsorship with the BCCI a year before the end of their tenure. They kicked off their tenure as the associate sponsors of BCCI in August 2019 and the contract was supposed to get concluded in 2023.

“Upstox has already achieved its business targets from the IPL sponsorships. Its valuation has crossed $3.5 billion and now the brand doesn’t need IPL anymore to reach a new audience.” A source from the company was quoted in interaction with Economic times.

Here’s the official tweet of Gaurav Gujal (Founder of Unacademy):

Byjus co-founder opens up:

Earlier, some media reports claimed that Byju’s, which is the official jersey partner of the Indian Cricket Team owes BCCI a whopping amount of INR 86.21 crores in unpaid debts. However, The co-founder of the company namely Divya Gokulnath has made an official LinkedIn post regarding the same. She has openly rubbished all the ‘fake’ reports.

“The bizarreness of the fake news story that we have not paid our dues to the BCCI was only matched by the urgency with which ‘media’ organizations ‘reported’ it. Even in this age of post-truth and verifying-after-reporting, we expect at least the real journalists to do some basic fact checks and not get swayed by hearsay and concocted stories by vested parties. As they say, a lie travels around the world while the truth is putting its shoes on. The truth is now out with its shoes on.” said the co-founder of Byjus

Byju’s has one more year left in their tenure as the BCCI’s jersey sponsors. The name of the prominent edtech company will continue to feature on the Indian shirt across all formats in all the matches of the team. This includes the highly-anticipated home and away bilateral series, T20 World Cup 2022, and India’s World Test Championship fixtures.

The Conclusion:

The Indian team will be featuring in their next home assignment directly in September this year. The Rohit Sharma-led unit is set to square off against Aaron Finch-led Australia in a three-match T20I series starting from September 20. The series will mark MasterCard’s first outing as the BCCI title sponsor. The home series will be played across different venues in India with full crowd capacity.

The series against World Champions Australia will be followed by a full-fledged limited overs series against Temba Bavuma-led South Africa. The home assignment will feature a three-match T20I series and a three-match ODI series. The series will officially commence on September 28.

These home games will come under MasterCard’s tenure. The title rights for all these encounters (9 matches) are now officially transferred to MasterCard. It will be indeed an interesting sight for the Indian fans as they will get to witness a brand new and fresh title sponsor after a long seven years.
